Here we catch up with #InnoVoice and InnoEnergy Master’s student Stefano Rosso who is studying MSc SELECT, at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech, Spain. He moved from Italy to join the programme to gain more technical skills and set him up for the future. Here he tells us more.
Why the InnoEnergy programme?
During my studies as a bachelor, I was a little bored just focusing on the technical side and I wanted a course that offered a bit more. The InnoEnergy programme is quite unique in terms of how it is delivered – there’s a mixture of technical focus and activities to develop practical skills for the workplace.
The programme itself has exceeded my expectations in a big way. All of the lectures and staff, both at the University and InnoEnergy, treat us like adults and there’s a real focus on equipping us for the future.
Getting acquainted with the business world
In 2018, getting acquainted with the business world is a must. Personally, I don’t think we can simply focus on the technical/engineering side any more.
The programme exposes us to other areas within business. We are not simply learning how to create the best system but instead we are learning a lot about how to make things happen – how to work has a team and how to operate as a leader.
It’s the development of these softer skills, alongside the technical skills, that will support me in making the transition into work and achieving our career aspirations.
Understanding how to make an impact
As part of the InnoEnergy Game-Changing Impact Programme I took part in The GC Index® assessment. This is a scientific framework, which enables individuals, teams and organisations to identify how they make their impact and how they can change the game.
After completing the assessment I was taken through my profile, which is going to be used to form part of my one-to-one coaching session discussions.
The results were impressive and seemed to sum up how I see myself perfectly. I am focused on solving problems and a very pragmatic person:
- Implementer – I am a particularly strong implementer. Someone who focuses on getting things done.
- Strategist – I am future focused and focus on setting direction in terms of strategic outcomes.
The results were spot on in terms of me not really being interested in the detail and just wanting to get on with things. I’m really looking forward to exploring the framework in a bit more detail, during my coaching sessions.
The results have helped me recognise where I need to tap into the skills of others on projects. I’d like to use my coaching sessions to understand more about how I can best work with others and tap into their strengths when working in a team.
What does the future look like?
Sustainability is key and the programme has opened my eyes to the different fields in which the skills we are learning can be applied. There are lots of organisations looking to grow in a sustainable way, which creates huge possibilities for me from an employment perspective.
Consulting is something that really appeals to me because of the variety and the fact I will be exposed to lots of different projects.
I love solving problems and think a consultancy role will offer me this. It will allow me able to tap into my strengths as a strategist and implementer to help other businesses make key decisions.
