Power the Future with a Master’s in Renewable Energy
The Master’s in Renewable Energy programme is a prestigious, innovation-driven Master’s degree jointly delivered by a consortium of top-tier European universities and industry partners. Ranked #5 in Energy and Natural Resources in Western Europe (EdUniversal Best Masters Ranking 2024), the programme is designed to equip students with the technical knowledge, business acumen, and entrepreneurial mindset needed to drive the global energy transition.
This two-year programme offers a unique blend of academic rigour and real-world application, preparing graduates to become future leaders in the renewable energy sector. Students benefit from a multidisciplinary curriculum that integrates engineering, innovation, and business, while also gaining access to a vibrant ecosystem of start-ups, research centres, and multinational corporations.
Year 1
Academics+
The first academic year lays the foundation for technical excellence and interdisciplinary learning. Students begin their journey at one of the programme’s partner universities, such as KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal), École Polytechnique (France), or UPC: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain), depending on their chosen mobility path.
The curriculum in Year 1 focuses on core engineering subjects related to renewable energy technologies, including:
• Renewable energy resources, technologies, and systems
• Centralized and sustainable power generation
• Energy efficiency and management
• Project-based learning.
Students can explore solar, wind, hydrogen, biomass and marine energy, storage and energy economics, and innovation strategy and management with the diverse catalogue of elective available at each partner university.
A key feature of the first year is the emphasis on collaborative learning and international exposure. Students work in multicultural teams, engage in case studies, and participate in site visits to energy facilities and innovation hubs. This immersive environment fosters a global perspective and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the energy sector.
Year 2
Academics+
The second year of the MSc RENE programme is where students consolidate their learning and apply it in specific contexts. They transfer to a second university within the consortium, allowing them to experience a new academic culture and broaden their technical expertise.
Year 2 is structured around advanced specialization courses and the Master’s thesis project. Students can tailor their studies to align with their career goals, choosing from a range of electives in areas such as:
• Renewable power generation (solar, thermal, wind, hydropower, ocean and offshore, biomass and biofuels)
• Storage and transmission (energy vectors, grid integration, batteries, hydrogen)
• Decarbonization, sustainable energy transition
• Energy economy and markets, policies
• Data Science and AI for energy
The Master’s thesis is a cornerstone of the second year. Conducted in collaboration with industry partners, research centres, or start-ups, the thesis allows students to tackle real-life challenges and contribute to cutting-edge developments in renewable energy. Many students use this opportunity to explore entrepreneurial ideas or deepen their engagement with a company.

Students also benefit from the broader InnoEnergy ecosystem, with access to over 500 partners across Europe, offering innovation projects, venture support, and a vibrant community of energy professionals.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship Journey
Energy, you won’t just learn about innovation—you’ll live it. Through an exclusive collaboration with ESADE Business School, you’ll gain over 170 hours of tailored entrepreneurship training in your first year, designed to help you turn bold ideas into real ventures.
Your journey is structured across three hands-on phases—Kick-off, intermediate sessions, and an engaging Summer School. This isn’t just business theory. It’s a practical, immersive experience that gives you the tools to think like an entrepreneur and act like a founder.
At the centre of it all is the New Venture Creation Project (NVCP). You’ll work in a team to develop a start-up idea from scratch—identifying opportunities, validating them, designing a business model, and ultimately preparing an investor-ready business plan. Throughout the process, you’ll get personalised mentoring from ESADE professors and industry experts who bring real-world insights to every step.
You’ll also build skills in finance, marketing, Agile project management, and intellectual property, while creative and design thinking workshops help you challenge assumptions and find bold solutions to complex problems.
At the end of the year, you’ll pitch your venture to a panel of professors and potential investors—an incredible opportunity to refine your communication skills and showcase your work.
This experience is more than a module. It’s a launchpad. You’ll grow as a leader, build resilience, and learn how to create meaningful value in the renewable energy sector. With ESADE’s guidance and the support of the InnoEnergy ecosystem, you’ll be ready to step confidently into the role of innovator, founder, and changemaker.
The I&E journey is not just about launching start-ups—it’s about cultivating a mindset of innovation, resilience, and impact. Whether students choose to become entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, or researchers, they leave the programme equipped to lead the energy transition.
